I would be very upset if the results came to anything else as a conclusion. The trip you experience during an episode of "tuning into (the brain's) own architecture", is one where you will experience the fundamentals of not just the brains architecture, but everything's. The shift in perception is akin to being able to locate hidden objects under the surface of the ocean by sending waves over them and looking for disruptions. If Cowan came to any other conclusion it would be far less convincing, especially as the patterns he's uncovered exist in so many other places and processes. It should be cautioned though that the mere seeing of patterns in the visual cortex is not the extent of the trip experience, nor the stimulated firing of motor neurons and emotion producing endorphins and dopamine. The final ingredient of the trip is more than the recognition of the truth as may come from the experimentation of mathematical models, but rather the experience of the truth. As Blake said, "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thru' narrow chinks of his cavern."
