“Animals and Psychedelics” by Giorgio Samorini

Expert on tribal ritual psychedelic use explores animal drug use

This new book by Giorgio Samorini, one of the world’s leading experts on the tribal, ritual use of psychedelics, observes the drug habits of dozens of animals, from elephants to goats, and even a few insects. He tells what they get high on, what they do when they’re high, and suggests tantalizing reasons for why they do it.

Samorini writes vividly; his 112 page book is like going on a stimulating psychedelic safari.

He tells how birds in the Western US, high on the fermented berries of the California Holly, engage in drunken orgies. He recounts how cats get high on catnip, an herb that gives male cats spontaneous erections and makes female cats adopt mating stances. Samorini reveals how mandrills in Gabon, Africa, dig up and eat the roots of the powerfully hallucinogenic Iboga Tabernathe, to prepare for combat to claim a female. The reader learns that, around the world, psychedelic animal orgies facilitate the continuation of many species.

Google to digitize library books

Books from some of the world’s largest academic libraries are to be scanned and made instantly searchable by Google.

The internet search engine has revealed plans to scan the whole of Michigan and Stanford University libraries, along with some archives at Harvard University and the New York Public Library, all in the US, as well as archives at Oxford University library in the UK.

Google has developed its own technology for scanning books rapidly and in a way that will not physically harm fragile old texts. Details have not been disclosed but Google spokesman Fabio Selmoni describes it as “a combination of digital and mechanical technology”.

Amazing and Wonderful Mind Machines You Can Build by G. Harry Stine

This is a strange and fun little book that challenges one’s understanding of the world as we are told it exists. The ideas and devices discussed herein are “impossible” or “frauds” by the standards of some. The trouble is, they work! Maybe not always and for everyone, but they work often enough for some pretty level-headed engineer types like John Campbell and G. Harry Stine to be convinced. Campbell was the famous (some would say infamous) editor of Analog magazine during its heyday, and Stine worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry. I have personally used dowsing rods and they worked for me even though I didn’t believe they would work at all. (It was a very strange feeling when they moved, too.)
